There was a piece in a recent issue of The New Yorker about a guy who claims to have run multiple marathons that can't be documented. Now it looks like Paul Ryan may be claiming to have a sub-3 hour PR in a marathon that also can't be documented. (http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2012/08/31/paul_ryan_s
_marathon_history_runners_world_wonders_aloud_whether_the_
vp_candidate_was_as_fast_as_he_claims_.html)

To be bipartisan about it, apparently John Kerry said that he's run the Boston Marathon, and there doesn't seem to be any documentation of that either.

Lying about running a marathon seems like the kind of thing only someone who lies automatically and compulsively would do. I suppose it doesn't rise to the level of lying about military service, but it is still disgraceful. Does this go on a lot? Have any Forum runners encountered this? It shouldn't be hard to catch someone out-- if you do is it worth calling the liar out?

How about we keep the politics off this forum. And by the way, the news article was total biased BS.

Calling a runner out for claiming to have run a 2:50 something marathon while in actuality running 4:01 is fair game. Not sure if it says anything about his politics but it certainly tells you that he couldn't care less about running.

If I ran a marathon slow enough can I lie and say I didn't run it?

Maybe is The New York Times was fair and balanced, we would not be discussing a marathon time, but instead the issues facing this country.
And, I agree, this is not a political forum. Can we please just stick to issues regarding the sport we all love? That is what it's about, isn't it? Love of the sport?

Ryan lied outrageously about his marathon performance.

What a pure phony!

I don't understand why he would lie about something like that. Doesn't matter if he's a Democrat or a Republican, he's a goofball who must have serious problems with an inferiority complex.

The point is not about politics, per se, which is why I included other examples in my initial post. My question is what do we do when we are confronted with this sort of pointless lying? Is is as bad as outright cheating-- cutting a course, e.g.? Cheating is a kind of lie, after all.

A few years back we had a discussion on this forum about a well-known local runner, who, as I recall, cut the Subaru 4 Mile Chase. I think we can all agree that being honest and competing within the rules are fundamental in our sport, and I think the fact that we believe that makes runners and athletes dependable, worthwhile members of society. How should we treat others who try to cloak themselves with our credential when they haven't earned it?

By calling everyone of them out on their cheating, and/or lying, in every instance, shunning them, and then not forgetting their personal dishonesty, ever, in the future.

Dang it Tech, why did you post that, I was just about ready to move to Jan's Gated Community as soon as I got my pedestal polished up.
So you mean people don't choose to be liars?

Wired, smired - who cares? They still lied.

**lkizz: you don't make it easy, do you? If almost anyone else had made that 'gated community' crack, I would have easily been able to joke that they would be far more likely to move to a gated community then me, but, with 'laid-back' Lloyd I might just possibly be telling a lie...

It is not a political forum, but this is not a political issue---the man lied about his running prowess, plain and simple.

None of these polticos can be trusted, most lie and believe it or not, it's not their fault; they're part of a machine that is whay beyond their control.

Is this really a 'lie'? I wouldn't go there. It is like the pot calling the kettle black.
