I’ve always enjoyed following high school cross country and if you do, tullyrunners is the best website out there. If you read the previews of this week’s “Intersectional Meet,” you will see some interesting comments. In the boys Class A preview, there were some coaches from other states wondering why there are only nine sections competing in the large school race?
You and I know that NYS has 11 sections and for the large schools, neither Section 7 (Plattsburgh) nor Section 10 (Potsdam) have Class A teams. In fact, the A race has 9, the B, 11, the C, 11, and the D, 10. Many will argue that that’s the elite of the elite, the best of the best and the cream of the crop.
I disagree and would like to see the NYSPHSAA expand its championship meet. Let the sectional champions enter, but let’s come up with more schools to make it a bigger and better championship meet.
I would like to see at least 15 schools in each race. I don’t condone adding another team from each section, but why not have the sectional champions and some wild cards for each class, bringing the total to 15, or even 18. Each section would continue to send 5 individuals, but even with 15 schools, you’re only adding 42 more runners to each race.
As you know, I’m an innovator, and I think outside the box. Far from a genius, but not opposed to revolutionary and fresh ideas going forward.
What do you think?

Unfortunately, the classes are determined by school populations based on enrollment for grades 9-11. Although not allowed at League, Sectional, nor State meets, many invitationals allow schools to move up into a more competitive race. Schools with talent as East Aurora will do this in some meets. I agree that the way the state team is chosen limits the talent. Other sports have 'qualification times'. If a swimmer swims a certain time in his/her event throughout the season, he/she may have met a qualifying time for states. Maybe this should be done for XC. I never actually thought of a solution to this until now. Thanks for making me think outside of the box! To view what schools fit into what class, go to great website, Section6Runs. You can download the XC handbook. It lists the enrollment of local schools in the section and where each fits. North Tonawanda has actually dropped since I took over coaching. The interesting thing is that in other sports, we are considered Class A. In XC, class B. When this change was made, I was only made aware of it through reading this handbook. Best of luck to the Section 6 team this Saturday!

The classes should continue to be classified by enrollments. But, take 15 schools in each class. The Federation Meet is the all-class race.
