 Help!! Training for Turkey Trot

I've promised my son I would try to run the turkey trot with him which is only a month away. I'm 48 with a bum knee and have never run in my life!! But I want to give it my all and do it without my son's knowledge to hopefully surprise him on the day. Can someone please help me? I need a training program to get me into running shape by that time. Just an FYI, I'm not out of shape and work out at a gym; however, I don't run and need to know if there is a special breathing technique because right now it's the breathing and chest pain that's my problem.

Not much time ...

Before you start you might want to get cleared by your Doctor - chest pain should never be ignored.

Next you need to have the correct shoes. Running shoes are no longer a simple choice, I suggest a running shoe store that can analyze your stride and recommend the right shoe.

The number one goal of running is to stay healthy.

Next you need to do an assessment of where you are at, running is not necessary about miles - more like effort level over a period of time (duration). If you are out of breath and having chest pain then your effort level is too high. I didn't think there are special breathing techniques other than being relaxed and consistent. Some folks try to match their breathing rate with their stride - breath in for 2 steps and breath out for the next 2 steps. Your beginning workouts will most likely involve a mixture of running and walking for say 30 minutes - 3 or 4 times a week.

I would suggest a search of the web for intro training programs as there are tons of them out there - you can find one that fits your current level.

Finally you need to taper and rest before the race so you are not fatigued from the training!!

Good Luck - hopefully you will discover the joy of running and stick with it.

Thanks!! I've had my heart checked out and it's just fine. The pain in my chest is because I'm not used to breathing so deeply!! lol

I did find a training program that I'll need to accelerate since it wants 2 months of training and I only have one! Oh well...time to get my groove on!

The run-walk approach is always a good option. Run for 8 minutes, walk for one, repeat. Good luck.

Yes I made it! I had injured my knee while "training" but still finished at a little bit better than I expected - it was 1 hour and 6 minutes and though the race is said to be 4.97 miles, a couple of friends of mine had it recorded as 5.08 miles. Regardless, I did it!! And on top of that, I finished thinking I could do better soooo I think a new runner has been born!! :-)

and on thing I found helpful was that after I ran for as long as I could continuously which was about a mile, we did the walk/run approach between traffic signals. Ran to one and then walked to the next until a couple of signals before the circle in the City and then ran the rest of the way. Phew!! It was excellent!!
