How much do trophies cost to cover a race with Male and Female categories, awarding 3 deep in age groupings? Or, more importantly, what is the individual retail price of a trophy?
In every instance I would prefer a glass, a key chain, a tee shirt, an item from the dollar store, etc. Because, what are you supposed to do with trophies? I loved them as a boy, but now they're either turfed, or I leave the race before they hand them out. It is not a sign of disrespect; I can't understand why these things are perpetuated.
If you are a race director, what other options have you explored aside from the standard metallic-runner-laden trophies? Are there other affordable alternatives? |

How about handing out a bag filled with coupons, pens and sticky notes. God knows I could never run out of office supplies. Heck, maybe throw in a $.50 candy bar.
Keep the shirt, the medal or trophy and give me a tall frosty beverage. Please... |

I agree. There are many awards that could be good alternatives to trophys. Nice Glass engraved Mug, Plate,Pint Glass, are nice alternatives.
For T-shirts the same is true. Sometimes a alternative would be nice. Options might include imprinted or embroidered visor, imprinted mesh/nylon bag, imprinted gloves, head/ear warmer (for winter runners, umbrella. It is nice that item be visible (have name of race and year)because that makes it special and is good visibility for the race. All of these items can be purchased for same cost as T shirt in many cases. |

I believe the Bunny Hop gave out chocolate rabbits as the prize.
And as for teh alternative to T-shirts, the gloves from the Bob Ivory run last year are great. Used them all winter.

Hey Brad, Good question. The Jamie Labarbera in NT on June 14th gives Wegmans gift cards, in pretty generous amounts. Last year we gave a bag of groceries to the top M/F. This year the awards include top M/F overall and masters. We hope to see you there. Russ Trippe |

Actually, its Mike Herron, not Brad.
I agree with Mike's sentiments. While I am sure a lot of people like to get trophies, especially those of us who dont always win one, alternatives would be nice.

I would so dig a belt buckle. How cool would that be! So I would have to be a triathlete member to snag that belt buckle, or is it a specific event. Because I was thinking about trying one this summer.
It is great to hear that a number of races are trying to mix it up.

Belt buckles are great...but only if you can find a leather shop that is inexpensive enough to make it worthwhile. Gift cards are another favorite as long as the amount can buy rather than supplement a purchase. How about approaching the sports drink companies for a container of their powder?

Mike-at next Sunday's (Father's Day June 15) Jog For The Jake we are awarding Ipod Shuffles to each age group winner. In addition the top three in each age group will receive very nice New Era Caps. We also are giving away "cool-max" shirts to all participants. At the Kids Race (young Cruz- could be a pre-race favorite) all finishers get a chocolate medal. After the race everyone enjoys the biggest post-race feast in WNY, catered by Delaware North. Lots of fun activities for the whole family.

I too was hoping that wouldn't go public. Damn this thread! Damn Rich Grimm for being so wonderful! Jog for the Jake has been on my race calendar all year...I will be there with my scissor legs.
Rich--I'm expecting to hear about your comeback plan. |

I used to hide my trophies in the bushes at a house which was near the race site. They got a nice little treat (harmless, too) when they went outside.
The Kyle Reid 5K gave out beer glasses at today's race. It was hot day, but a good jog. |
