The end of an era really. When I started running in 1983, guys like him, Beishline, Ivory, Sal Teresi, Don Wadsworth and many more were road racing staples.
Once you started running road races, it was the same people at the races--WNY Finish Line Services and of course, the legendary Don Mitchell, the pioneer who changed how road races are scored forever.
I ran my first Shamrock in 1985 and after a few years, the famous centipedes appeared. Grandits made a good point. He said that in 1986, there were few novelty runners, that everybody was serious.
As a "serious" runner I used to dislike that the TV stations would show the centipedes and interview them instead of interviewing the winners of the race. But I soon realized that these are events; events that bring out the community and those centipedes were better marketers than any serious runner would be.
Is there not a better community event than the Shamrock Run?
RIP Mr. Grandits----you left your mark!
