Hello Jeff,
I crossed the Taco run off my bucket list last week. I was talking with father and son runners the Whelan's and was impressed too find out that Joseph has run a OTQ time 2:16.
I know that J.Krolick had gotten his time's down over the last couple year's and it got me thinking who holds the fastest marathon time's.

When you get a chance is it possible too list the top 10 fastest marathon time's run by local runner's male and female. Your call on who is considered a local runner and how far back you want to go. Thanks in advance.

PS. The Taco run was one and done

Hi Pat - Congratulations on experiencing the Mighty Mile!

Yikes! A TOP 10 LIST. This is actually a tall order. The reason is that many of the best runs were done 30 years ago and even today the best performances posted by local runners, like Finucane and Zimmerman, were run out of town. We'd have to really dig to get close to a complete list. It'd literally take weeks.

But we can quickly get a clue. We do have a handful of historic local results and recently we've added "virtual local races".

Here's a link to the TOP 56 list of local marathon runs from our database of local races, posted by local runners, in local races.
(That means the sub 2:20 runs are not in this list since they were run out of town and have not been added to the database).

I am confident Mark is the fastest WNYer in the marathon. This list is no doubt incomplete but the criteria for this list are
- sub 2:25 performer
- from, or strongly connected to, WNY

Mark Finucane (St Francis HS) 2:11:55 1984 Houston marathon

Joe Whelan (Hamburg HS) 2:12:16 2025 Boston Marathon {post edit 04/22/25, replaced previous best of 2:13:39}

David O'Keeffe (didn't grow up in WNY) 2:16:22 1993 San Sebastián, Spain (World Marathon Cup)

Ralph Zimmerman (I don't know his origin) 2:17:16 1979 New Orleans’ Mardi Gras Marathon

Matt Hellerer (St Joseph's Collegiate Institute) 2:18:11 1983 Boston Marathon

Mike Deren (Frontier HS) 2:18:29 2018 CNO Indianapolis Monumental Marathon

Jake Krolick (Pioneer HS) 2:19:01 2020 Houston Marathon {post edit 1/19/20, replaced previous best of 2:24:15}

Jeff Kumm (from Niagara Falls) 2:19:32 1983 New York City Marathon {post edit 01/22/19, previously not on list}

Bernie Prabucki (Seneca Vocational HS) 2:20:01 1984 Orlando Festival Marathon [may have run faster?]

Todd Witzleben (Orchard Park HS) 2:21.23 2005 Austin Marathon

Thanks for the follow up Ken C. After looking at your list I would think it safe to assume that Mr.Hellerer holds the fastest time run at Boston from WNY runners.
Another thing that stood out to me is Mr. Gordan running a 2:31 in 74' and then coming back 9 year's later and running a 2:35 in 83'

Just out of curiosity JJ how come Krolick's 2015 run of 2:25 didn't make your list ?

The older I get, the more I dislike running in the COLD

I also believe Vasilis Kariolis ran a 2:28:41 at Twin Cities in 2012 (10/7/2012).

Good catch, Pat! When we filter for "locals" we refer to a table with names of towns that constitute "The Greater Buffalo Region". Originally that was defined as towns within Erie and Niagara counties. But, the borders of this region are not cast in iron. They have stretched over the years as runners request inclusion. Jacob hails from Arcade. Arcade is in Wyoming county and Arcade has never made the list. The list had 120 town names.... now it has 121.

Oops! My bad. Just realized this list only includes marathons listed on the BR site. My post may be disregarded.

That's right... just what we have - local runners running in local races.

The list we'd like to see would take some real work digging through disparate archives, if they exist. And, it still might not be complete since there is no standard results format.

For example, even now in 2018, the very popular Las Vegas R&R Marathon has stymied us by only sharing results that omit hometown and state. That's new for this year. We cant use that! I've written... no response.

Jeff, is Albion on that list of 122 "local" towns? When I run sub-2:40 at Wineglass next year, it would be cool to get on the top-100 list! Ah, just kidding, but I am aiming for 3:00. At age 60, though, that does age-grade to 2:26 :)

This is a really funny topic on the BR Forum. The Mighty Mile is probably about as "opposite" of a style of racing compared to a marathon as you can get... Fueling with one meat cheese lettuce & tomato Mighty between all 4 quarter miles definitely rewards runners with a different skill set than enduring the 26.2.

The Mighty Mile was a lot of fun though! Now onto 2019 running goals... should I train on inhaling tacos sub 10 seconds or increasing my mileage???

Great job Jake, bad-ass !!!!

Thanks for the update on Jake's race this morning I tried following him online but sometimes old folks and new technology don't mix well.

I know Rochester is not Buffalo, but I must mention my old pal, the late and great Charlie McMullen.

In the mid-1970’s Charlie ran the mile in 3:56 and the marathon in 2:15. He was a national class master runner and world-class person.
