I think I have a stress fracture. I can run on it but it hurts the rest of the day. I can continue to tough it out but don't want to do any long term damage. I'd like to get it checked out but I know what my regular doctor will say. Does anyone have any recommendations for a sports medicine doctor?

Derek,

Sorry to hear that, thats at least a 8 week recovery. What ever doc you choose will probably make you start with a x-ray and if that dont show it than you will need a MRI. Dave Okeefe in O.Park found mine in my hip a few years back ago. I would try to get in to see him asap if you want to be ready for the fall. Running on it will just make it worse. Any doc that can run like he does knows his stuff. Good luck brother.

Derek,
Pats right. I have a stress fracture in my foot that's kept me from running about 10 months even though I had surgery to stabilize it. I ignored the pain while training for the Corning Marathon.Guess what? My marathon got cancelled. Definitely get an x-ray and then a bone scan. MRI's can miss stress fractures. Mine did. Sports medicine doctor definitely that specializes in your area of the body. Good luck.

Definitely go to O'Keefe! He found mine and helped me when I had one too in my lower tibia.

I RUN...it may not be as fast anymore, but I RUN...end of story.

O'Keefe found one in my right foot a while back. I was in the best shape of my life at that that point and I hammered the eliptical and pool for 7 weeks and didn't lose that much of my conditioning.

Thanks everyone. My appointment isn't until July 7th so I'm sort of in limbo. Its hard to tell yourself not to run when your not sure of the injury. I've been hammering the bike but can't help but run sometimes. I can run I just don't want to do any long term damage.

Get a short term membership to a gym and use their elipticals. I know some gyms let you sign up month to month.

I'm riding the bike because I have someone to do long rides with and I'm trying to make the transition to TRI's anyway. Do you think I should dothe eliptical also? Smacz, great signature by the way.
