Also check out Section6Runs.com for the complete schedule of all local high school track & field invitationals, including the state qualifiers (Sectionals) as noted above.

Should be a glorious season if the weather continues like it has been!

While watching my GI Vikings close out their regular season at Lew-Port,it didn`t take long to figure out why Lew-Port was chosen for this year`s NFL and Section VI meets. It is easily the most modern and best looking high school track and field facility most of us will ever see in our lifetimes. If JF likes to see fast times and broken records (as stated elsewhere in this forum) Lew-Port is the place to be this Friday and Saturday. THE GOOD NEWS IS THE SAME OUTFIT That Designed Lew-Port`s Beautiful New Complex Will Be in charge of designing Grand Island`s new athletic complex(at least according to my sources). Hopefully that won`t take forever!!!!!!!!

The problem on GI has always been the strength of the taxpayers groups. I have heard them speak at several open forums sponsored by the Board of Education. They don`t like special ed., athletics, after school activities, etc. even though I remember several of them very active in them. I was schocked last December at the wide margin in which the referendums passed, even though a high portion of the funding comes from Albany. Last Fall SECTION VI would not allow the higher seeded GI girls soccer team to host (2)sectional games because of the terrrible shape of their fields. Instead GI had to rent Lew-Port`s field (for a fee) even though Lew-Port was one of the teams they were up against !!!!

The field event areas were poorly designed. The discus was embarassing. The long jumps pits did not have enough sand (illegal). The high jump was crowded with the competitors, not spectator friendly and the mats were very small(were they legal?) The pole vault runway was crowded. A vaulter could easily be slapped in the ass as he ran by a spectator. Did anybody notice the 400 foot firehose Saturday morning to fill the steeple pit? What kind of architect does not run a water line? Two of the four wooden, ancient light poles are out of plumb. This facility had alot of corners cut and poor planning - and it shows. I have seen much, much better. To pile on, the organization of the meet was abysmal. Does Lew-Port own a lawn mower? No running clock at the finish line. No Friday results online by the time keeping company. Section 6 skimped on the officials. Everybody in the bleachers saw JFK girls 4x1 exchange the baton out side zone 3 - but no DQ because there WAS NO OFFICIAL ASSIGNED THERE. They go on to win in the finals - no fault of the JFK girls, but Allegany got screwed. Each field event only had 1 official, so the offical had to beg for volunteers to help them. Shame on Tim Slade for the lack of officials.

austicfather-no offense, but the only reason Lew-Port got Sectionals is because it was the north's turn to host-and nobody else wanted it. It was NOT because of the facilty.

Welcome to the world of budget cutting. The Section chose to cut the number of officials as a cost savings...thus you do not have the necessary number of officials to properly run the meet and to catch the errors on the track.

I sound like a broken record with this mantra but the districts that revise their sponsorship/adviertising policies are the ones that will be able to fund their athletics. Some will resort to pay-to-play and that isn't a bad idea but there will be many families with some very talented student-athletes who won't be able to participate because of finances.

The well is drying up (if not dry already) folks, start thinking outside the box before athletics are dropped entirely by the districts!

What really hurts high school sports is a lack of support from local alumni. I just love to go to watch GI Cross Country, Soccer, Football, Basketball, Wrestling, Track, and Lacrosse. Everything is either free or dirt cheap and GI has a proud winning tradition in most of these sports, but I see only close relatives or friends of the participants. How about it JF, is it like that where you are ?

You're right about the GI taxpayers....they are a strong lot. GI has had one of the most successful football programs of all time, under Gene Masters (the field is named after him) and now under Dean Santorio, yet the football complex is simply abysmal. In the spring, the Vikes advanced the Class A state final in baseball, yert their home field is so mickey mouse.

As far as spectating goes, AF, I do agree with you, but times have changed. I walked to school, and often, my father would come home from work and take both me and my sister to basketball games. But, times were much simpler then. Work was much more defined, families ate dinner together and there was substantial after dinner time. Both my parents were usually home by 4, leaving time for a good dinner and then a journey to the gym for a high scholl basketball game. Now, the daily work schedule includes all types of hours, often at home and the family dynamic is very different. Maybe I'm being too simplistic, but I miss more of my kids events than I make, and I don't think I'm alone. Don't forget about the divorce rate, which requires exchanges between the former spouses, which leaves even less time for attending events.

JF, I think you nailed it with your comments on family dynamics nowadays, so sad but true.

There are sports marketing companies that do help school districts with acquiring equipment, uniforms, facilities, etc by seeking out and working to find sponsors in exchange for their name to be put on to a scoreboard for example. It doesn't cost the district anything. These companies are paid a commission from the funds being paid by the sponsor. It seems like a win-win proposition for everyone except the school district admin always seem to have some agenda that prevents them to take advantage of these services.
