Just checked out the results from Snowball. I am having my doubts about the reliability of the course length. Either that, or alot of people got really really fast in the last couple of weeks...

I'm offended... That was a big PR for me. Plus from the looks of the other thread, it'd put me near the top of the list of non high school runner runners.

I had 2.74 on my garmin. I was told the officer took a wrong turn right off the bat. I knew when I went through the 1st mile marker and the guy standing there yelled, "4 flat" something might be wrong.

Yeah it was a mess. 1st mile was well off. Actual distance was somewhere between 2.75-2.80.

...nice race...D DUN...!!!...tell me your secret...you must have thrown some serious speed work into your training regimen recently...seriously though...nice overall win...no matter what the distance...

...BK...you once told me...you dropped nearly 2 minutes off of your PR in less than a month...by starting a meditation routine with...lkizz...and...I heard...LUVAMAN...was able to hit his PR this season...simply by letting his hair grow...

WELCOME TO THE NEXT PHASE OF RUNNING...

That would be me! Woohoo!! I knocked almost three minutes off my 5K time in a week!

Obviously, I am joking. If there's a way to change the results to reflect the incorrect distance, or add an asterisk or something, that would be cool. I might be able to run a 21-minute 5K someday, but last saturday was not that day.

these kinds of things just happen sometimes... little imperfections. you just know when something's off. I knew the shamrock run wasn't a full 8k this past yr. when I looked at my watch and saw my time. even though I would have liked to think I had gotten that much faster in a short period of time, I knew I didn't.

Derek, congratulations for a marvelous road race win! Loved your post! I have updated the race distance (with an estimate) and re-calced the pace for all. It's good to see that many of the affected runners have tried to enjoy the snafu and make the best of it.

Hopefully, this is not a harbinger of things to come in the Town of Amherst. Historically, police service and town cooperation with our running events has been superb – almost always serving as an example of competence and professionalism that has been second to none.

This was the smallest turnout in the Snowball 5K event’s 6 year history. The RD had a challenging environment this year… With only weeks to go before race day, turmoil and misinformation in Amherst resulted in the race being told they had to pay an exorbitant new fee for police coverage. The value of that new misconstrued fee was an order of magnitude in excess of the total anticipated gross revenue for the race, hence, the RD had no choice but to immediately cancel. We noted it on our calendar at the time. But only days later the RD was informed the new fee policy would not take effect until January. It was then “Race on!”. We re-updated the calendar.

But trouble did not end there. The course was not certified and the published “map” was almost comically difficult to discern. The police officer’s insistence on going the wrong way, in contradiction to the counsel of multiple on-course volunteers, may have been an honest and predictable mistake.

But there was more. The RD had meticulously placed helpful placards along the route to inform the public of the event but, inexplicably, the Town had them silently removed prior to the race.

The self-defeating new fee is apparently the result of a desire to meet the financial needs of the town without raising taxes. That’s certainly a noble goal we can all support.

But the errant thinking was that we could get money for new police vehicles by having a fee for the Town’s running events. The problem is running events are not big cash generators. If the Town Board implements the fee, then there will be NO RACES in Amherst, and therefore no money for the new police vehicles.

This is either an abject dishonor to our Amherst Police, a severe misunderstanding within the Town Board, or simply brainstorming run amuck.

Hopefully, sounder thinking will ultimately prevail.

Also did a 5k recently where the mile markers were surely off... I was supposedly at 11:30 at the 2 mile mark... heck, I'd be stocked to be at 12 minutes at that point in a 5k.. to think i was that far ahead of my game, absurd.

It would be a shame if Amherst races such as Lebro's are affected by this new mandated fee. Not only it is a worthy cause, but also a well organized, enjoyable race which has become an annual must-attend event for me. I mirror your sentiment and hope that the decision is reevaluated and a more logical approach to fund raising is found.

Jeff -- Thanks for adjusting the results for the shorter estimated distance. I appreciate you taking the time to do that.

A fellow runner asked for my help with a petition and campaign plan to fight the misguided police services fee. I created the petition for him, but I don't believe he has begun circulating it. If he does plan to move ahead with his campaign I'll encourage him to post here so anyone interested can lend a hand.

Like hell. Police protection is what present taxes pay for. Gouging athletes is a poor model-- there are no races in Amherst that are worth paying a premium for, and if the Town wants to drive runners out they have figured out exactly how to do it.
