I am a first year XC coach at NTHS. I am digusted with the lack of coverage by the Buff News re: the NFL and its accomplishments.
Are you aware that Lockport's coach Bob Eberhardt celebrated his 500th coachin victory at the NFL Championships on the 29th?
This is a tremendous accomplishment. I cannot believe there was no mention in the Buff News. At least the Tonawanda News mentioned it.
Lockport traditionally has a very strong program. They once again swept the League Championships.
In the Buff. News XC spotlight in the beginning of the season, there was not ONE word mentioned about the NFL. Every other area league was mentioned and covered. Is the staff aware that our league exists?
So, congratulations, Bob. You are an inspiration and a great coach.
P.S. Bob, can I borrow $500.00?

The Niagara Falls Gazette is a Rolls-Royce in comparison to either the Buffalo News or the Grand Island Dispatch in it`s coverage of any sport (male or female) from Grand Island. Lockport HS Cross Country accomplishments definetly deserve far more attention than it`s getting from any of the news media. Three times this season I watched them dominate meets with an abundance of talent and experience, they are definetly very well coached. The Buffalo News and television devotes far too much attention to the Sabres and Bills(even if they are having terrible seasons) and way too little attention to the high schools, especially the Niagara Frontier League.

Being from NT, I can tell you that football appears to be the only game in town. This is where the majority of HS sports coverage is dedicated to.
It is unfortunate. I coached swimming and track for years and those sports were given little attention.
It is like banging your head against the wall. I tell my athletes that XC is a very self-motivated sport with little to no external rewards. I guess this is a life lesson as well.
I congratulate all the XC athletes from WNY and wish them the best in the NYS State Championships and the Federation meet next weekend. These kids are tremendous athletes and I respect their dedication and hard work.

Before I forget I would also like to congratulate Bob, from what I can see Lockport will be a cross country powerhouse into the foreseeable future with a freshman running in the NYS meet tommorrow. I was really impressed with how every member (male and female) from Lockport returned to the finish area and cheered for an autistic runner from Grand Island as she finished. Bob does more than coach a winning team. The parents I spoke to from North Tonawanda are very appreciative of everything you have done, Jeanne, they seem to think you have things headed in the right direction.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I tell the athletes that if they perform well, the onus is on them, and if they perform poorly, the onus is on them as well. I can lead them in a good direction and hope they follow it. I will not accept praise for their accomplishemnts nor criticism for their failures.
What I need is an infusion of potential runners to build the program!

Jeanne,

First off, congratulations to Bob for his accomplishment. There's not many coaches who have the longevity or passion to reach this milestone. I will say that getting to know many of the local high school XC/track & field coaches over these past few years, there should be more reaching this as I can see the passion for the sport and the kids in their eyes.

I'll defend the Buffalo News in this respect, when they can get people out to the events, they do a wonderful job. Their stories are well written and always has a theme to them. But you are right, they primarily cover only the major sports (e.g., football) but it is really is due to a lack of staffing and quite frankly, readership interest.

With that said and without seeming like a shameless plug, please forward these sort of accomplishments to me at Section6Runs.com. That is what the site was set up to do...provide the running community, particularly the high school athletes AND their coaches, a "one-stop-shop" to get information relating to their sport.

As with any sort of informational web site, if these stories are not forwarded to the site or newspaper, it will of course, not be reported. So it becomes incumbent on the people (coaches) involved to get the information to the right people to report it.

Unfortunately, I can only be at one place at any given time but am more than happy to put something on the site if someone lets me know.
