I wasn't going to break down and ask, but has anyone ever had calf issues (cramps, strain, etc) that cause swelling/edema in the shin and even down into the ankle?
I was trying to be patient, but since 2 weeks ago (all starting with knee problems), I developed some calf issues-- first with the right, and once that one went away, now the left. At first, I assumed the swelling on the right leg had to do with my right knee (which has a torn meniscus issue going on), but since the crazy calf pain moved into my left "good" leg, now I am starting to wonder why my leg is swelling up and looking gross to go along with it.
Last day I ran was the Shamrock, which I semi-jogged, because I didn't want the calf to flare up and cause me to limp to the finish (which happened with the other one the week prior). That night, I couldn't walk, and figured I'd better finally take a few days off.
So 2 days later (Monday), I look down to find my ankle is no longer there (many know the term "Cankles"? just like that).
I am just not sure when to start worrying. If this is natural (and I've never seen this, except once when I was pregnant and the other time after each knee surgery), I just want to know. If not, I think I'd better start looking for a dr.....

Anyone ever have the same problem? It would be nice to know and if so, what happened?

Jeff

Hi Allison -- It could be a lot of things, but initially it sounds a lot like an ailment seen in some exceptionally accomplished runners like yourself. US Olympian and American record holder Mary Decker for one. Compartment Syndrome.

Here's a link I just looked up:

I sure hope you recover quickly!

I will look into it....but I really hope you are wrong.....I had a roommate at PSU that had it- went in for surgery, etc. I don't believe she is running any more
I will look into it though.
Still have a swollen ankle today- but not pain in the calf...of course, 3 days off of running will probably help pain subside. I will just wait to see how the swelling looks and go from there. I ordered myself a minimum 5 days off, then try to see how I feel and go from there.
Thanks for the info. I will do some research.

Good news, I guess-- it doesn't look like that fits my description. The pain I am feeling is definitely in the soleus- on the inside of the leg and not the outside of the shin
Well, I'll still be searching for answers-- but if it hadn't been for that one specific location that gave it away, all other symptoms seemed the same. After the Shammy and once I got home to sit down, my calf was very tight and sore to the touch. Good thing is, it went away fast, and seems almost completely better- except the whole nasty swelling thing going on. Hmph....I am still clueless...but I'm glad its (hopefully) not that!
