i average 50-60 miles/week and ran my first marathon, the niagara falls international, about a month ago. i was diagnosed with shingles on wednesday. has anyone else ever had this? and could it be due to overtraining? the doctor indicated shingles is caused by stress and/or a weak immune system...i lead a pretty low stress life and i was just wondering if a fellow runner had any experience with this condition. any help/advice is greatly appreciated!
That may well have happened. Another possiblity, if you got sick after the race, is that if you reduced your training/running after the race, your immune system may have weakened. The hard training before the race psychologically may keep you healthy, then when you slow down, you are more susceptible to sicknesses.
Many time this happens with runners the week before a big race during the taper period. Some runners now reduce thier miles but keep the intensity up the week before the race. Ryan Hall has been doing this.
Another example is folks who always seem to get sick when they go on vacation.
