Section 6 has asked Section6Runs to cease posting images from any future meets, indoor or outdoor, unless model releases are acquired from you, the student-athlete. Unless these releases are filed with me, I cannot continue to cover your accomplishments in the manner I intended.

With that in mind and for the time being, please go to www.section6runs.com and download the general model release. If you are under 18 years of age, you must have your parents complete it and fax it to the number indicated on the form. Please inform you teammates to do likewise.

I realize that not everyone gets photographed, although I do try to make sure I photograph all events and participants when I attend an event. Since I don't know all of you or can single you out during an event, I need to acquire as many releases as possible.

I apologize for this inconvenience but this is what our litigious society has imposed upon well-meaning projects such as Section6Runs. Thanks gang!

This really is a shame that you have to go through this. The site is a great place for student athletes to look at results and the pictures are a phenomenal feature of the site. While you don't make any money off of Section6Runs, I can see where it can lead into legal trouble. It was actually a nice gesture by Section 6 to inform you of this, but really just adds to your workload and may end up causing problems (parents not signing form or other crap).

An easy way to get the most releases may be to fax the form to the A.D. of each Section 6 school and have each coach hand out the forms to the athletes. While this would be a lot of work, it would be cheaper than printing out copies for all athletes and would get more athletes signed up than the website would. I'm sure there would be a lot of runners that wouldn't know about the release and would end up causing problems if athletes need to be censored from pictures.

Also, maybe try contacting the Buffalo News and maybe get a notice posted in the Sports section for high school runners to head over to section6runs.com and send in the form.

Thanks for all the hard work!

This is probably a really stupid question that could probably receive a stupid answer but, what is the difference between your website posting images of races and newspapers who post images? Do all newspapers have to get clearance from the athletes or do they have a special deal with Section 6?

Exactly! There are many articles on photogrpahers rights and basically, anything in public can be taken without consent. I have to research more into this and have many inquiries out requesting information.

This is pathetic!

I wonder if it has something to do with the name of your site. If it was "WNY Harriers" or something like that how could the section police you? It might actually be easier to change the name of your site that to concern yourself with the bureaucratic BS of section 6. I'd check with them before you go to the trouble.

My experience has been that ARMORY, DYESTAT, TULLY, etc don't get releases before posting pictures of kids, even those under 18.

The purported section 6 request is not legally enforcable. The request is probably based on some unstated fear or ignorance of the law. It might be worthwhile to request additional information.

Section 6 has been very helpful and accomodating in requesting this of me and they are not the "big brother bureaucrats" that they are perceived to be in this matter.

There are some concerns that they have and I am investigating the photogrpahy rights at public events. Until I can get a clear understanding of what my 1st Ammendment rights are, I have to abide by the release document for now.

Thanks for everyone's concern...it will be resolved soon!

As one of the Section 6 Chairmen, I cannot overstate how valuable and worthwhile Section6Runs.com is to our sports. It is something that has been long overdue and now it's original intent is being despirited. The Chairmen are working with the web site author and the Section to get the issues resolved in the most efficient and timely manner.

For now, please try and adhere to the web site's request for the model release form. At some point we will alert the coaches of the situation more fully and have them help us with the model release forms. Actually, that will probably take place this weekend at the 7th-10th Grade Champs and WNY Relays. We'll keep everyone posted.

All parties involved are trying our best to preserve the integrity of the site and the Section. We appreciate your input and support.

I'm very glad to hear the section recognizes the volunteer commitment of "section6 runs"

Now I'm just curious. Can anyone tell us why these releases are needed for section 6 runs and why they're not needed by Tully, Dye, and Armory? I assume you would be free to post any other photos without the release, as long as they're not from section 6 events, correct?

I am not a lawyer and I certainly don't play one on TV but from the research I've done, if it is done commercially, it would require a release.

As these events are considered a public event and is a "newsworthy" one at that, model releases are not required for it to be published. Now with that being said, there are probably fine points that only an attorney can interpret.

I just want to reiterate once again, please do not perceive Section 6 to be the villian here. They have a policy that is driven by NYS Education law and they obviously have to follow it. I don't know about other sections and their policies but this is what Section 6 has to follow.

Any ways, thank you all for your encouraging emails and support!

Bump!

Ladies and Gents...just a reminder, please go to www.section6runs.com and download the model release form from the site and complete it ASAP. The form contains the fax number and address to send the complete forms back to.

I would like to go to Fredonia this weekend and take some photos of the competition.

For now, please humor me and respond to my request. Please pass it along to your teammates to do so as well.

I appreciate your help!

Fast forward five years....what a ride!

Nothing came of this matter after everyone saw what the intent of the site was and it actually has become the defacto one-stop shop for WNY scholastic XC and track & field. in fact, Section 6 has also gotten behind the site as they have provided a link to Section6Runs directly from their site. Heck, even the Buffalo News taps into my photo archive on occasion for a specific individual or team. They've even published an article submitted by one of their former NeXt correspondants, Emily Steves, who ran for Gowanda and is now a journalism major at St. Bonaventure and on their XC team. Link to article --> http://www.buffalonews.com/life/next/article626892.ece

The site has grown every year by about 30% in visitors and about 25% in page views. It's all because of the support by the student-athletes, caoches and parents and to all of you...thank you, thank you, thank you! I cannot express enough sincere thanks for this support.

Finally, if anyone or business has the same passion for high school running and would like to show their support through sponsorship or advertising on Section6Runs, please contact me directly for details.

Happy Holidays to all!

I have sent emails to my XC team members. I will inform my AD upon return to school next week.
I know my athletes appreciate this site and enjoy seeing their pictures posted. Hopefully, this will be resolved in an amicable method. Thanks for all the hard work. It is nice for these kids to get the recognition they deserve.
As I mentioned in a previous topic, our sport is so underappreciated by the media in general.
Happy New Year!

Jeanne, you should probably observe the dates of these posts, because this was actually a problem 5 years ago. Now, thankfully, everything seems to be cleared up, and this website continues to be an AMAZING tool for our local runners.
