Why? Why? What do we think?

Cheaters never win.

Nike's Big Bet: Alberto Salazar and the Fine Line of Sport.
Documentary 2021 1H 23min.

This can be watched on the Peacock channel for free.

I still do not consider him a cheat.

And I DEFINITELY believe he is America's greatest distance runner ever.

My column addresses much of what she said. Everybody assumes jockeys starve themselves, but thatís not the case---theyíre born little and through a strict diet, they keep that weight down. The great distance runners are similar.

Rhinesóa Liverpool, NY native---is a small person who did things the right way. She ate, she had her periods, but she knew when it was time to ďget serious,Ē and cut stuff out to prepare for the big seasons.

Iím sure Mary Cain knows, too. What she went through sounds horrible and is something that Rhines didnít deal with, but the bottom line is this---the runner has to realize when theyíve hit their own personal breaking point. If you weight 118 pounds, and cut out donuts, eat right and get back to 110, then thatís probably healthy. If you weight 118, and have to starve yourself to get to 110, then maybe itís time to stop the torture, use that college degree, get a job in your field and run as best as you as can---on your own terms.

Maybe Mary finds rejuvenation with anew coach, or maybe she moves on, goes to college, runs for fun and enjoys her life.

Itís not that simple, but itís really not that hard either.

Interesting thoughts from Jen Rhines: "The issues and abuse that have been exposed recently in the coaching of female runners is unacceptable, and I know that the athletes that suffered through these experiences will continue to fight to make sure the next generation doesnít experience the same thing."

I appreciate that very much and though I didn't say it.....I agree that we are softer than ever.

I know you didn't say that. I DID,and we have.
I was complimenting you on your professionally written article.

I do think we have softened up------I didnít say that in the piece, however. I just brought out some realities with running and specifically, with female bodies in running. Runners have to watch their weight; there is no denying that. They also have to healthy.

What happened to Mary Cain is far from new. My manifesto is coming.

Shalane's apology is the reaction of someone who has an ounce of empathy for a fellow runner: https://twitter.com/runmarycain/status/1192475991173668864?s=20

Wow----that's where we're at today. If you like somebody, you'll defend them to the hilt, if you don't you won't.

As for Mary Cain, I feel for her, but I don't feel super bad for her if that makes sense. She chose to go pro when she should have went to college and ran there. Let's hope Kathryn Tuohey decides that college is the best way. The colleges can churn and burn we know that, but these are 18 year old kids---they need to be around like people, ie fellow 18 year olds.

Cain knew it wasn't going to be easy---she knew that turning pro would be demanding. We also know that dynamics of the woman's body---for many, the more mature they get, the slower they get. By making them stay thin (which we know it isn't right), they keep the bodies from maturing---which means no boobs, hips, etc.

There are many cases where the HS freshman is a star, but by the time they are seniors, they are getting beat by freshman. Sad, but true.

That said, maybe we just let nature take its course. If the 14 year old is running 17:00 for 5K and then as an 18 year old is running 18:00, let her become a road racer and a recreational runner; let's not try to starve her in the hopes that she gets back back to 17. But so many kids want and need to have that scholarship so they force themselves--or are forced-to do things that are not normal.

This is not easy here---there are many moving parts. Salazar has been banned and more stories will come out. On the other hand, these are athletes that decided to work with him---no guns to anybody's head.

In time, the truth will come out.

What an idiotic take on an abusive relationship.
Occhino Posted - November 09 2019 : 09:03:05
Dear Mary,
We told you right from the beginning that the training was going to be intense. It's too bad that you were not able to handle it but please shut-up and just run. Best of luck with your comeback.

Ok Guys---I give. If he isn't a cheat, then what is he? He was just banned for four years.

I will take away they cheat moniker, but I need you to explain what the deal is then.

Thank you.
