I read where the World Record for the 5k for men is 12:37 and 14:11 for women but wonder if anyone knows the fastest run around here?

Bill Mangan ran for Niagara Falls HS---under coach Gary Bongiovanni during the PowerCats halcyon days. The 1982 team was third in the Class A NYSPHSAA Meet in a blanket finish---Ithaca won with 86 points, Churchville-Chili was second with 87 points with the Falls third with 88. Mangan was 4th overall; teammate Tom Maroon(later ran for some good Niagara teams) was 10th

The next week, Niagara Falls routed all to win the Federations. That was quite a team.

Mangan attended New Mexico which explains listing Albuquerque as his hometown. While there, he won the Penn Relays 5,000 meters in 13:47 and change. I would count Bill as a local guy as he grew up here and honed his running skills in WNY!

I had some of it right---I knew Mangan ran the fastest 5K time and I knew he did at the Vietnam race---but I thought it was 14:11.

The Falls pumped out some very good runners in the late 1970s to late 1980s-----Grana, Mangan, Perri, Sauvaugeau just to name a few. Perri ran collegiately at Houston, Sauvageau, LaSalle.

In our BuffaloRunners database of local road race results, after eliminating the "noise" of short courses and other anomalies...

The top known 4 female performances are held by Vicki Mitchell. The next closest is by Allison Carr.

1. Victoria Mitchell, Snyder NY, 1st, 0:16:15, 9/02/1994, Nickel City 5K, Buffalo NY

5. Allison Carr, West Seneca NY, 1st, 0:17:03, 8/21/2004, Mississippi Mudd's

For the men, there is fellow named William Mangan who had three very fast performances locally in 1989 - 1990 but its not clear if he is actually a local runner. Maybe someone knows? I don't recall. He has listed hometowns of Niagara Falls NY and Albuquerque NM. There are also no less than 3 persons with the same name who are local runners, but not the same age, or quite as fast as this fellow.

Another complication is that a lot of guys ran real fast in college, like Peter Meindl, who clocked under 14 minutes for the 5K on the track, but we're just looking at the local 5K road races here...

1. William Mangan, Niagara Falls NY, 1st, 0:14:22, 5/26/1990, Viet Nam Veterans Leadership, Buffalo NY.

1. Dan Garrett, Williamsville NY, 1st, 0:14:30, 8/30/1991, Nickel City 5K.

2. Bernie Prabucki, West Seneca NY, 1st, 0:14:32, 9/08/1984, Buffalo Police Chase 5K.

2. Jim Dunlop, Jr., Getzville NY, 1st, 0:14:32, 9/07/1996, Buffalo Police Chase 5K.

2. David O'Keeffe, Orchard Park NY, 1st, 0:14:32, 9/11/1993, Buffalo Police Chase 5K.

I would imagine Vicki Mitchell has the fastest time locally, but I do not know what it is.
