There was a sad and shocking tragedy early this morning in Amherst. A homeowner shot and killed a man who had accidentally entered the wrong home, presumably by mistake.
31 year old David Park, an Albany area elementary school teacher, little league baseball coach and a runner, had been attending a party on the street, left the party briefly, then attempted to return. Unfortunately, in the dark, Mr. Park "returned" to the wrong house.
Park was a frequent visitor to the area. He had run the Buffalo YMCA Turkey Trot in 2006, 2008 and won his age group in the Brothers Of Mercy 5K last October. No charges have been filed.
I’m all for self defense, but is it really necessary to use deadly force against an unarmed man who has no interest in harming you? If you’re that easily frightened into using deadly force against a harmless unarmed intruder, maybe, it would be better for you to not possess a gun in the first place.
A few words like, “You are in the wrong house, get out please” would probably have been just as effective and a whole lot less messy.

Don't be so quick to judge this one....1am...drunk....there is more here than we know. If you come into my home at 1am, I'm not going to ask to many questions. By the time you ask, chances are your the victim.

This got lots of attention back here in the Capital. According to local reports, the homeowner did yell out and Mr. Park did not respond.
It is not as far fetched as it seems. I was in Buffalo a few years ago for Shamrock and was driving to my friends house on Grand Island. He lived at "50", I wrote down 58, and went to 58. Thankfully, nobody was home, but I tried to get in through the front, side, and back doors (my friend said he might not be home but the door would be unlocked). If the people at 58 were home, they might have called the police, or even worse, did what was done to Mr. Park. I was not drunk, just a number transposer, and lucky as well.
He taught at Arbor Hill ES, an innercity school with lots of poverty, violence, and crime. A sad loss for the Arbor Hill community.
