| I’ve had plantar fasciitis since late January. I’ve tried to take time off but I can’t due all the training. I ice and stretch all the time but it still hurts a lot. I was wondering if anyone knew if a cortisone shot would do anything for it. Has anyone had past experiences with cortisone shots? |

I've never had it done, but I have heard from others that it HURTS LIKE HELL!
I RUN...it may not be as fast anymore, but I RUN...end of story. |

| "I felt your pain!" Cortisone shots are too unpredictable. It can work a miracle or destroy a tendon. I've alway opted to skip that gamble. This injury really takes a long time to clear up. Get the Strasburg Sock if you have not already. Now that is a miracle you can live with. |

Skip the shot. From what I hear it destroys the muscle. All last summer and fall I had VERY BAD plantar (could'nt walk in the morning when I first woke up until it stretched out a bit and hobbled around work during the day) and still ran 70-85+ mile weeks and ran huge PRs.
If you can't take time off the best things are icing, stretching, running on grass and making sure you have good shoes (not too many miles on them). I took time off in Dec and the pain went away up until recently when I have been cranking my mileage back into the 80s.
Basically, they hurt, they suck, but you can run through them and they should'nt hamper your racing. There is not much you can do about them unless you want to take time off from running and stay off your feet as much as possible during the day and do pool / bike workouts.

I haven't had experience with cortisone, but i have experience with plantar fascitis, and really the thing that helped most was submerging my foot in a bucket of icewate up to 2/3 of my calf. I bunched a wool sock up around my toes to keep them from freezing and the rest was one. It's best to do it immediately after you run, and do a few cycles of it (15-20min in, 15-20 mins out, and so on). This really got me through the extreme pain of PF and to point where it slowly began to heal. and take it easy on the mileage

I had three cortsione shots in 1999 for PF. It felt better for a few days, maybe a week, but never cured the problem. It is an inexact science. If they miss, you got no shot. If they hit it right, you have a good shot.
Time is the only way to heal PF. It will run its course, when it runs its course, which is usually about 12 months.
I don't think time off from running helps or hurts. And, if you keep running, it doesn't necessarily hurt it either.
The thing that worked best for me was putting water in a dixie cup, freezing it, then rubbing it on the affected area for 10 minutes (no more). You should do this after you run to "cool it down." This will not heal PF, but it will help relieve some symptoms.
I also would not walk around with barefeet. I thought that Birkenstocks worked for me. I limped, but not as bad.
It's a crummy injury, and because that area doesn't get a lot of blood, it takes a long time to heal it.
